As well as British Ships having Scottish engineers, they had (and still have) navigation lights (red port, green starboard- and a few extras on aeroplanes). I can see why the Scottish engineer tradition carried onto USS Enterprise, but why did the navigation lights idea carry onto a vessel that travels faster than the speed of light?

I knew that, and I knew it when the series was first on TV. It was one of many the things that impressed me about it. (There were also a number of things about it made me roll my eyes to heaven, but I still loved it.)
