This short audio program explains how to take care of a book that gets wet. The first step is to freeze it as soon as possible.
One minute how-to #326
I recall hearing similar advice on the radio as a hurricane was approaching Houston. In that case it was aimed at the bigger kind of water damage mentioned. The advice was basically the same — freeze the soaked books immediately and then freeze-dry them, to avoid letting the liquid water deform the pages. If I recall correctly there are some services which will dry frozen books for you, or maybe the guy was just plugging his own services. Anyway if the hair dryer works that’s great.
Of course, this won’t help if you don’t have electricity (or liquid nitrogen I suppose).
